Brunch at Mayberry (part 2)

You may remember way back when I wrote a raving review of Mayberry's delicious brunch.  It quickly became one of our favorite brunches in the city.  Then, for a while, they stopped serving brunch for some reason.  Then it came back, but before we had a chance to go Mayberry moved from their downtown location near the public library to Over-the-Rhine.  So, a couple Sundays ago we invited my sister and brother-in-law to brunch, and they picked Mayberry.  Neither had ever been for brunch and it was everyone's first visit to the new location.  So, without further ado...

Mayberry's menu changes pretty often, though they keep some items on the menu permanently...like the Rosemary Biscuits and Sausage Gravy and the Tater Tot Casserole.

Sadly, one item that always used to be on the old Mayberry's brunch menu, the Elvis Killer, was not on the new Mayberry's brunch menu.    The Elvis Killer was my jam.  I loved it hardcore.  So instead I went for the French Toast with strawberries and chocolate.  It came with this buttery deliciousness all over it! YUM YUM YUM!

Antoine went for his Mayberry usual, the Rosemary Biscuits and Sausage Gravy with a poached eggs on top.  He's a biscuits and gravy kind of guy and he loves this dish.  I'm not a biscuits and sausage gravy kind of gal, but I gotta say, Mayberry's is pretty tasty.  The rosemary in the biscuits adds a nice aroma and flavor.

My sis got the BLT with Peppered Bacon, Leek Gouda Fondue and Roasted Tomato.  The second I took a bite of this my eyes rolled back and I let out a fairly loud "Mmmm!"  Delicious.

Christian got the Roasted Lamb with Mashed Potatoes.  I didn't try this, nor did anyone else at the table, because I don't like eating lamb.  But he seemed to really like it.  He also got a Bloody Mary, and he enjoyed that as well.

Ahh, Tater Tot Casserole.  It's so pretty and delicious!  This was by far the BEST Tater Tot Casserole I've had at Mayberry!  Beyond cheesy with lots of little lovely browned bits. If it was acceptable I would totally order like 10 of these for brunch, but I think people would judge me!

As far as the new location goes, it's bigger, which is a definitely plus.  They've got a nice big bar as well.  It's a definite step up (as far as size) from the last place.  I hope that they do very well in this location, I know I'll be back many, many times...stuffing my face full of tater tot casserole!

Fondue

We all know my love for cheese, right?  Well, you know what's even better than cheese?  Melted cheese!  Mmm.  Warm, melty cheese that you dip bread and apples in.  Yep, we're talking fondue people!  From the first time I ever had fondue (I was probably in high school) I was in love with it!  And it's not surprising that the first place I tried it was at the Melting Pot.  I mean, there aren't a plethora of fondue joints out there.  So usually when people say "fondue" it's followed by Melting Pot...at least in the Cincinnati area.  The Melting Pot is one of my favorite places to go for a melty, delicious treat.  My hlp and I would occasionally go during college whenever we felt the need to celebrate.  We'd get cheese and chocolate fondue and be in total bliss.  Occasionally we'd splurge and get the meat as well, but we were college students so that didn't happen very often.  If you know the story of me and Antoine, you know that he took me to the Melting Pot for our first date, not even knowing how much I loved it!  So, yeah, I kind of dig the place!

So, when I was up in Cleveland this weekend visiting my hlp and expressed a craving for fondue, she immediately suggested the Melting Pot, since neither of us had been in some time!  So off we went to the nearest Melting Pot, which was only about 15 minutes away from her apartment!  As far as Melting Pots go, they're all pretty much the same, being a chain and all.  Unfortunately, our waiter was a total stick in the mud, which is sad because generally the waiters/waitresses at Melting Pot are extremely personable and energetic.  He was not.

The salads at Melting Pot are quite tasty, I've never had a bad one.  I usually go for the California salad with mixed greens, candied pecans, gorgonzola, tomatoes (which I skipped...bleh!), and their fantastic raspberry black walnut vinaigrette!  Seriously, I want a bottle of that stuff (fyi, they do sell their dressings).

Then onto the cheese fondue.  Whether I'm with Antoine or Amanda we always get the cheddar cheese fondue (with lager and garlic).  I've had the swiss, and it was okay, but the cheddar is where it's at!  Although, next time, I really want to try the Wisconsin trio (fontina, butterkase, and bleu).

For dessert we went for the Original (our usual), which is milk chocolate with a spoonful of crunchy peanut butter!  YUM!

The variety of dippers for the dessert is fantastic: strawberries, bananas, brownies, pound cake, cheesecake, rice krispie treats, and marshmallows covered in cookie crumbles.  The marshmallow above is my personal favorite!

And the strawberries are a close second.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a shot of the dippers tray before we attacked it!  But trust me, it's a beautiful sight!

How about you, have you ever been to Melting Pot or another fondue place?  What's your favorite part?

Two Year Anniversary

As you may or may not know, yesterday was Antoine's and my two year anniversary. Yes, we're the type of couple that actually celebrates stuff like that. Get over it! Anyway, for this anniversary we decided to take our special day off from both jobs and just spend the day together. A whole day off is a rarity for us, so this was kind of a big deal! In addition, we've got our big anniversary trip to Louisville coming up in just two days, but more on that in a later post. Back to our anniversary. We kept it pretty low key...no cards or crazy gifts or anything, just the two of us spending time together.

To start off the day I made breakfast croissant sandwiches. They were pretty tasty! Then we made our way to the butterfly show. We got discounted tickets through groupon.com, so instead of $12 for two tickets, it ended up only being $6 for both of us. Last year we went for the first time for my mom's birthday. It was fun. This year was pretty much the same; Krohn Conservatory has a great selection of flowers and there were a ton of butterflies in the exhibit. But man, was it hot in there! Seriously, it was so flippin' hot! I thought I was a curry!! It was so hot I made myself sexist! (Sorry for those of you who don't watch Flight of the Conchords and didn't get that!! Actually, no, I'm not sorry! Because, really, you should know that! There's no excuse!). Anyway, here's some pictures I took at Krohn...

Weird funky cactus thing

I love orchids!

Needless to say, I took a crap ton of orchid pictures...

Antoine caught a butterfly using a fake flower

My favorite butterfly (except for maybe the blue ones that you can never get a picture of)

Butterfly stare-down...

I like him!

After the butterfly show we ran down to Findlay Market for some delicious Dojo gelato! We love Dojo...maybe a little too much! We shared a cup of our favorites: Vietnamese coffee and Sea Salt Caramel! Yum! Then, since we were already downtown, we decided to go to the Cincinnati Public library for the pop-up book exhibit, which was pretty interesting (and free!). Then we walked a block up to Servatii's for a pretzel...and what do ya know, Tuesday is buy-one-pretzel-get-one-free day at Servatii's! Score!

Then it was off to Michael's to pick up a poster frame for our sweet, new Shepard Fairey poster! And what do ya know (again) it was 40% off! We were just having all kinds of luck yesterday! Next we went to Dick's Sporting Goods to get the rest of the stuff we needed for camping, which included a sandwich maker thingy, a stick for roasting hot dogs/marshmellows, a tarp, and two packages of freeze-dried ice cream sandwiches (and as soon as I picked these up, Antoine said to me, "but you can't eat them now, you have to wait till we're camping" [he knows me so well]...my response was of course, "how about, on our way to camping?"). After that we made our way to the Melting Pot for some deliciously wonderful fondue! For those of you who haven't been...GO NOW! Run! Hurry! It's that tasty!

After Melting Pot we ran to the grocery store to load up on food for this weekend...you know, the essentials...marshmellows, graham crackers, hersheys bars, hot dogs, etc. Then we spotted (after a little bit of hunting) this Shepard Fairey mural in Oakley (just behind Boca)...

I really like this one! Now Antoine and I really want to go on a Shepard Fairey hunt and try to see every S.F. mural around the city! Don't be surprised if you see a post like that in the future! We're both pretty intrigued by him and his murals right now, plus we want to see the other ones before anymore idiots go and cover them up! Anyway, after our mural-spotting it was off to Target for a "quick stop" for bottled water. An hour or so later we emerged...but more on that later!

So, that was our fun-filled anniversary day of adventure. But after all that running around, I think I need another day of just cuddling and relaxing in my pjs watching Friends! Alas, it's back to work for me! I've got two days of hell ahead (i.e. working back to back at both jobs; i.e. very little time to see Antoine, pack, or sleep) then it's off to Louisville for us!

3 days of Hell...Then a Weekend of Fun!

This week is going to be a mixture of chaos and fun for me. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday will be back to back days at the library and sbux for me. Not fun at all!! But then Tuesday I have the whole day off! Yes, you heard me right...THE WHOLE DAY!! No library! No Sbux! Just me and Antoine enjoying each others company! It is our anniversary after all, that's what you're supposed to do! We also need to go get the last bits and pieces for our camping trip this weekend. And we might go pick up a frame for the sweet Shepard Fairey poster that my sis and bro-in-law got for us this past Saturday at the Event. While I was slaving away at Sbux, those lucky ducks were hob-nobbing it with Mr. Fairey and a hoard of his fans! That's cool though, I'm glad they enjoyed themselves AND they got Antoine and I a poster...
...signed by Fairey himself! How freakin' cool is that!? Answer: super freakin' cool!

Also, for our anniversary Antoine and I might run down to Krohn Conservatory for the butterfly show. If I snap any good pictures I'll make sure I share them on here. We're also planning to go to the Melting Pot for dinner. The Melting Pot, besides being oh so delicious, holds a special place in our hearts considering two years ago tomorrow we had our very first date there! Awe!

Then after two more days of back-to-back hell I'm finally free!! Off we go to Louisville for three full days! Camping. Bourbon. Art. Bourbon. Pancakes. Bourbon. And Antoine! What's not to love!? I can't wait, I'm so excited!! I just hope it doesn't rain! So far, the forecast for Louisville looks pretty nice...so fingers crossed everybody! Think happy thoughts for us!

A Little Quiz

This little quiz was stolen from a fellow blogger...

What are your middle names?
Mine is Elease (my mom didn't know that it's usually spelled "Elise"...hence my middle name is like an online renter's agreement). Antoine doesn't have a middle name, I guess in Vietnam middle names aren't very common. But he does have a Vietnamese name.

How long have you been together?
We've been together 1 year and 9 months. I know it doesn't seem long, but when you're mad about someone sometimes minutes feeling like hours and days feel like years (and I realize that's kind of the opposite of how people describe time with the ones they love, but that's how I feel)!

How long did you know each other before you started dating?
Maybe like 5 weeks or so. But we had never met...

Who asked whom out?
Hmm, well, as I recall I'm the one that suggested that we meet, or just said that I was ready to meet. He worked out all the details of our first date!

How old are each of you?
I'm newly 25. He'll be 29 in July!

Whose siblings do you see the most?
Hmm, that's hard to say. My sister lives about 5 minutes down the road and his brother lives about 30 minutes south. We probably see a little more of my sister, but it's a close call!

Which situation is the hardest on you as a couple?
That's a tough one. Before I would have said both of us working two jobs, but that's pretty under control now. Maybe when the cats vomit on the floor, I step in it, and then take my frustration out on him...ugh, stupid cats. The hardest situation may be on the horizon if Antoine ends up taking on a consulting job that requires travel, I'd probably only see him on weekends, which would be beyond tough. He's my best friend and I wouldn't like not seeing him everyday! Not having him to wake up next every morning...I'd miss that!

Did you go to the same school?
Nope, different high schools, different states. Different colleges, different cities.

Are you from the same home town?
Nope, he's from Arlington, TX and I'm from middle of nowhere, OH!

Who is smarter?
I think we're both smart cookies in our own ways. When it comes to business and IT things...it's totally Antoine. When it comes to movies and random knowledge (books, music, etc)...that's all me!

Who is the most sensitive?
Me. Normally as a person I don't consider myself horribly sensitive, but when it comes to Antoine and matters of the heart I'm a big prissy girl! Don't get me wrong, Antoine has his moments though!

Where do you eat out most as a couple?
That's a tough one too. Lately we've been trying out a lot of new places (a mini-quest if you will). When we were first dating we'd always go to Daybreak for breakfast/brunch on the weekend, it was our thing, but then they closed :( Now, probably home?

Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple?
Jamaica for our one year anniversary! It was amazing!

Who has the craziest exes?
Him I guess. I really don't have any "exes". He has one major "ex" and she caused a little bit of trouble early on in our relationship.

Who has the worst temper?
Me! Sometimes I'm totally irrational and I come from a family of casual yellers. Antoine, on the other hand, has a mild temper, he's very down to earth and difficult to shake! For example, often when I start inexplicably yelling at him he'll smile and me and tell me I'm cute!

Who does the cooking?
I think it's usually 50-50. Okay, maybe 40-60, he likes to cook new things for me! Usually we do most our cooking together! Or if we grill out, we'll do the prep together, I'll do all the kitchen food (veggies, rice, etc) and he'll manage the grill.

Who is the neat-freak?
Neither of us...except when my parents are coming into town or someone (besides my best friend) is coming over...then I go nuts and go on a cleaning spree. But, in general, we're both pretty messy!

Who is more stubborn?
Probably me again. What can I say!?

Who hogs the bed?
Definitely him! I'll wake up on the edge of the bed and he'll be sprawled out over the remaining three-fourths.

Who wakes up earlier?

Me. During the week I have to be at work by 7:30am. He can roll in pretty much whenever and most of the time works from home. But he has this cute habit of waking up when I'm getting ready and following me downstairs, and lately, getting my lunch ready for me (he's so cute)!

Where was your first date?
Melting Pot. He knew I loved cheese!

Who is more jealous?
Probably me...gosh, this quiz is making me look like some sort of monster!

How long did it take to get serious?
About three months for the "I love you's". But I'd say we were pretty serious about each other after 2 months or so.

Who eats more?
It's probably a tie...we both love to eat.

Who does the laundry?
Usually me. I generally do the laundry and he does the dishes (since I do dishes at Sbux).

Who's better with the computer?
Hahaha, umm, that'd be Antoine! He should be better, that's what he does for a living!

Who drives when you are together?
It's probably 30-70, I usually drive more because I drive to work and he takes the bus, that leaves my car at the end of the driveway. However, I think we both make pretty lousy passengers! And I always like to assert that I'm a better driver, when I'm actually better at focusing on driving and he gets easily distracted, but he's probably better at maneuvering his car (that's what she said).

Love Story: Part Three

So, I left off on the first date. A very nervous and late Antoine had just picked me up. He was quite the gentleman though, apologizing for being late, telling me how nice I looked, and opening the car door for me (which he still does to this day...even if we're just going to the grocery store). I knew we were having dinner, what I didn't know was where. We began driving to this mystery location and surprisingly I was a regular chatterbox in the car. I wasn't really nervous...astonishing, I know! We proceeded to pull into the parking lot of one of my favorite restaurants, the Melting Pot. I stated, "I love this place, it's one of my favorites". Antoine told me that he'd never been there, but he knew I loved cheese so he figured I might like it! I was admittedly surprised that we were going to such a nice restaurant on a first date, and a blind date at that! I did try to make the bill as small as I could, getting water (which is the norm for me anyway) and suggesting that we just get cheese and chocolate (instead of a full entree, also another norm for me at Melting Pot).

Dinner was great, as usual, and the date was progressing just fine. I can't really remember what we talked about, probably jobs and where we're from and all that, but I do remember me continuing to be fairly calm and talkative and he remained nervous and slightly quiet. We ate our dinner, which at the Melting Pot takes some time, and then left the restaurant. Antoine then suggested that we go to a movie, which I agreed to. However, instead of going to one of the nearby theaters we went to one in Northern KY, nearly 30 minutes away (not his fault, it is one of the main theaters in the Cincinnati area). So, by this time it was probably close to 10 o'clock or so, I was starting to get sleepy, as I usually do around that time when I have work the next morning, but onward we went to the theater.

I must admit, I have a horrible memory. So, sadly, I'm not exactly sure what movie we saw on our first date. It was either Iron Man or Get Smart; one we saw on our first date, the other on our 3rd or 4th. Let me also admit, prior to the date I was hoping he wouldn't take me to a movie. I love movies, most everyone knows that about me, but I don't feel movies are conducive to what dating is all about (at least in the beginning)...talking. Here are the reasons why I don't think movies work on the first couple dates...

1.) Do you get popcorn and a drink or not?: When a guy takes you out for dinner it's assumed that you'll order an entree, but when you go to a movie I don't think it should be necessarily assumed that popcorn is included, especially if it's a dinner/movie combo date. With the combo date, the guy has already shelled out a decent amount of money on dinner for both you and him, by the time you get to the theater he's unloading an additional $6 to $10 each on the ticket alone (that's nearly as much as an entree at a normal restaurant). I don't think it's fair to add the overpriced theater popcorn/drink/candy into the mix. But let's face it, any decent guy will offer the option to you, that's what Antoine did and I refused it.

2.) Pre-movie chatting: I feel that side-by-side talking is uncomfortable and generally strained (unless you're further along in dating...you know, the stage where you're all snuggling and thigh grabbing). While sitting so close to your date might be an added bonus, it really doesn't allow for any good conversation. Instead you wind up twisting your neck so much that you end up with a cramp.

3.) Do you have a talker on your hands? (This only pertains to people with pet peeves similar to mine.) One of my biggest pet peeves is when people talk during movies. For me, this applies to ALL movies, but I think talking in the theater is by far the worst. Unfortunately for Antoine, he was not aware of this. So when he leaned in to talk to me during the movie, he got a very slight nod and a cold shoulder every time.

4.) Arm around the shoulder: Now I know this depends on the people, their body types, their preferences, etc, but for me, those initial arm-around-my-shoulder moves, while romantic and sweet, were horribly uncomfortable and left my neck craned and cramped. In our case though, Antoine is slightly shorter than me, leaving his "arm around my shoulder move" more like an "arm around the upper back move". Sometimes I think things like that need to be finessed once you get to know someone better (you know, through practice). Now we've got it perfected, but we'll both admit that that first move was a bit awkward and uncomfortable.

5.) The post-movie discussion: While we didn't experience any difficulty in this department (even though I'm usually quiet and resistant to discussing movies right after I see them...I'm weird like that). In general, I think this has the potential to make a date go little sour, depending on the subject of the film and how different people respond to it.

But, I guess all those awkward moments are just part of the first date though and without them it might be a tad boring.

After the movie, Antoine took a very sleepy me back to my apartment. We said goodnight with a hug at my porch, which was nice since he knew I wanted to move slow. All in all, not the best first date in the world, but not the worst. It left me interested for another date.

Spoiler: Our second date was by far one of my favorite dates in that first month of dating Antoine! It's one we still talk about all the time.
